Hooray, summer is finally here! It’s time to get outside in your garden and enjoy that beautiful sunshine. To keep your garden looking it’s best throughout the hot Melbourne weather it’s important to watch out for warning signs that your garden is struggling and needs some attention.
Between your regular visits from our maintenance team it’s important to understand and recognise the signs that your garden is suffering. Some common things to look out for are:
Plant stress and wilting – Plant stress is most commonly due to a lack of moisture within the soil. Whilst the soil surface may appear moist you may need to dig down and make sure it is moist to a depth of approximately 6″. If soil is too dry, water plants thoroughly; they should recover within 24 hours. Adding a wetting agent to the soil will help to retain moisture.
Heat stress in Lawns – Heat stress is caused by the heat and humidity when the lawn lacks water. A lawn suffering from heat stress will show loss of color in the leaf, browning off and is more likely to have problems with diseases, weed infestations, insect infestations, bare spots and even death.
Adding wetting agents and long deep watering leading into hot spells will help alleviate these issues.
Irrigation controller failure – Signs that your irrigation controller has failed will be evident in your garden. Your plants will start to wilt and close up their leaves in order to conserve energy during this period. If the controller needs to have a professional look at it then you will need to hand water or engage sprinklers attached to the garden hoses during this period.
Don’t forget to regularly get out the hose and give your garden a nice long soak to allow the water to get deep into the roots and into the soil where it can hold moisture for longer. The best time to water is early in the day before the hot sun sets in for the day.
