You may be surprised to know that Autumn is a great time to inject some love into your garden to prepare it for not only the colder months, but beyond that too.
The Autumn climate has less severe temperatures, but the air isn’t too extreme to wilt leaves, and the soil still holds some warmth for new roots from Summer. Perfect! Here are our best tips to get your garden Autumn ready:
1. Tidy Up: Autumn is a great time to assess your garden for the year to come. Leaf drop has just begun here in Melbourne and it’s time to sweep, sweep and sweep again. Don’t forget to clean gutters & borders from leaves that have fallen from over hanging trees. It’s also a good time to prune back existing plants as this will prepare them for new growth later in the year.
2. Relocating Existing Plants & Planting New Ones: Autumn provides the perfect climate to relocate and plant new plants as the air temperature isn’t extreme enough to send plants into shock. Now is the perfect time to separate and move those parts of the garden that have grown well and become congested over Summer. You may also consider planting evergreens or Winter annuals to ensure your garden has some year-round colour in future seasons.
3. Lawn Care: Chances are your lawn has taken a beating over Summer and is looking dry. We advise giving it a rake to remove any dead brown matter followed by a long soak.
4. Turn Soil: Similarly to your lawn, your soil may be feeling dry and in need of some love. Turn over the soil, break up hard clumps, remove weeds as you go and give it a good water.
The Winter months can be harsh on plants so it’s important to get them cool-weather-ready. We understand that you may not be a natural green thumb, or life is busy and you just don’t have the time you’d like to get into your garden. That’s where we come in.
